St Paul's and the City - by Frances Farmar |
The Company’s annual service of Christmas carols and readings took place at St Lawrence Jewry on the evening of Tuesday 13 December with our Honorary Chaplain, The Rev Canon David Parrott officiating and preaching. The service, kindly put together by Liveryman Paul Weston in conjunction with both the Chaplain and his Director of Music Catherine Ennis was, as always, a delight. Some 60 members of the Company were in attendance.
As seems to be customary David Parrott’s sermon (if that is the right terminology) was based around the visual aids which he had brought with him – white gloves and a tricorn hat. These, he explained, were what City Vicars needed to invest in when they took up their posts as Chaplains to the Lord Mayor of Sheriff. In addition to having to purchase such items it seems that there is a very clear code of etiquette which sets out how and precisely where (geography-wise) they should be worn. The moral of the story was that, in much the same way as such accoutrements rendered their owners ‘fit for purpose’ on those important City occasions, so should we be fit for purpose in God’s service in the City – particularly at Christmas time.
The generously catered buffet supper which followed was again held at the back of the church – a format which allows members of the Company to chat informally with colleagues, guests and friends.
